Xoom Energy Review
Is Xoom Energy good? NRG-owned, ACN-sold. Prepaid available, 50% green max, decent rates. Not on ComparePower. Read the full review.
Quick Facts
Is Xoom Energy good? Xoom Energy is an NRG subsidiary still sold heavily through ACN’s direct sales network. The electricity works fine and rates are mid-pack, but the ACN connection means commission overhead is baked into pricing. Not currently available on ComparePower.

Company Overview
Xoom Energy started in 2011 as ACN’s electricity brand—built from the ground up to be sold through multi-level marketing. ACN’s independent business owners (IBOs) pitched Xoom at hotel meetings and kitchen tables, earning ongoing commissions from every customer’s monthly bill.
Then NRG Energy bought Xoom for $210 million in 2018. That’s the same NRG that owns Reliant Energy, Green Mountain Energy, Stream Energy, Cirro Energy, and Discount Power. NRG is a publicly traded company with a market cap north of $20 billion. Your lights aren’t going anywhere.
Here’s the thing that makes Xoom unusual in 2026: it’s an NRG subsidiary that still actively sells through ACN’s MLM network. Visit acn.com and Xoom is right there on the services page. ACN IBOs still earn commissions when they sign you up. The enrollment form still asks for your referring IBO’s ID number.
But Xoom also sells directly through its own website and through third-party comparison sites. You don’t have to go through an ACN rep. The question is whether the commission structure built into Xoom’s DNA still affects its pricing—and based on where Xoom rates typically land, the answer is probably yes.
Xoom is not currently listed on ComparePower. You’ll need to shop their plans directly at xoomenergy.com or through an ACN representative.
The NRG + ACN Hybrid
This is what makes Xoom hard to categorize. It’s owned by NRG—one of the largest power companies in America. But it’s distributed like an MLM product.
The NRG side: Corporate backing, financial stability, legitimate PUCT certification (No. 10203), professional customer service center, online enrollment portal.
The ACN side: Independent business owners still pitch Xoom at networking events. IBOs pay $299 to join ACN plus $25/month in support fees. They earn ongoing commissions when their customers pay their electricity bills. They earn more when they recruit other IBOs who sign up customers.
What this means for you:
- If you sign up directly on xoomenergy.com, your experience is similar to any other mid-tier REP
- If you sign up through an ACN rep, that rep earns commissions on your account indefinitely
- Either way, Xoom’s rate structure was designed to support commission payouts
- You may get follow-up contact from ACN about “business opportunities”
NRG hasn’t dismantled the ACN partnership. If anything, the relationship is still prominently featured. This is a deliberate choice—ACN provides a customer acquisition channel that costs NRG nothing upfront.
Plan Types
Xoom offers more variety than you’d expect from a provider not listed on major comparison platforms.
SureLock (Fixed-Rate) Lock in a rate for 12, 24, or 36 months. These are straightforward fixed-price plans. The SureLock 12 is the most popular. Early termination fees: $150 for 12-month plans, scaling up to $395 for 36-month contracts.
Variable-Rate Month-to-month pricing with no contract and no early termination fee. Rate changes monthly based on market conditions. Good for short-term situations, but expect rates to run higher than fixed alternatives.
Prepaid (Pre-Pay Power) No credit check, no deposit. Pay in advance and your balance decreases daily as you use electricity. Service continues until your balance hits zero. Rates are typically higher than postpaid plans—you’re paying a convenience premium for skipping the credit check.
SimpleClean (Green) Xoom’s renewable option offsets 50% of your usage with Renewable Energy Credits (RECs). That’s it—50%, not 100%. Standard non-renewable Xoom plans source only about 12% renewable content, which is below the Texas average of roughly 21%.
If green energy matters to you, 50% isn’t competitive. Gexa Energy makes every plan 100% renewable at no extra cost. Green Mountain Energy exists specifically for this purpose.
RescueLock (Charitable) A 12-month fixed plan that donates 5% of your monthly energy charges to PetSmart Charities. Same structure as SureLock, with the charitable component built in.
MiraclePower (AEP Central Only) A 24-month plan available exclusively in the AEP Texas Central service area. Donates 5% of monthly energy charges to Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi. A nice gesture if you’re in that territory.
Freedom2Connect: ETF Buyout
Xoom will reimburse up to $150 in early termination fees when you switch from another provider. You’ll need to:
- Enroll on a fixed-price plan of 12 months or longer
- Submit your final bill showing the ETF charge within 30 days
- Reimbursement comes as a bill credit within 1-2 billing cycles
This is a decent perk, but $150 only covers the ETF on shorter contracts from other providers. If you’re locked into a 36-month plan elsewhere with a $295+ penalty, Freedom2Connect won’t cover the full amount.
Where Xoom Operates in Texas
Xoom serves all major deregulated Texas territories:
- Oncor: Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Midland, Waco
- CenterPoint: Houston metro
- AEP Texas Central: Corpus Christi, Victoria, McAllen, Harlingen

Xoom does not serve municipal utility areas like Austin (Austin Energy) or San Antonio (CPS Energy).
Deposit and Credit Requirements
Xoom runs a soft credit pull through Equifax’s Advanced Energy Risk Model. This checks your utility payment history specifically—not your full FICO score—and won’t show up on your credit report.
If you pass: No deposit. You’re enrolled.
If you don’t pass: Deposit required, capped at the greater of two months’ estimated bills or one-fifth of annual billing (per PUCT rules). Refundable after 12 consecutive on-time payments, with interest accruing per PUCT regulations.
Ways to skip the deposit:
- Good utility payment history
- Age 65 or older with valid ID
- Active military with documentation
- Letter of credit from previous provider (no more than 1 late in 12 months)
- Verified victim of family violence
- Existing Xoom customer with 6+ months of on-time payments
Or skip the credit check entirely: Enroll on a prepaid plan. No credit check, no deposit, no contract.

Pricing Reality
Xoom rates are mid-pack. Not the cheapest, not the most expensive. The commission structure built into the ACN channel adds overhead that shows up in your rate, even if you sign up directly online.
For context: NRG’s other brands—Reliant, Green Mountain, Cirro—all sell through traditional comparison shopping platforms where they compete head-to-head on price. Xoom’s primary distribution channel is ACN, where customers don’t typically comparison shop. That pricing dynamic matters.
Xoom is not listed on ComparePower, which makes direct rate comparison harder. You’ll need to check xoomenergy.com or other comparison sites to see current rates for your zip code.
The Bottom Line
Xoom Energy is a legitimate NRG subsidiary with real corporate backing, proper PUCT certification, and functional customer service. The electricity works the same as every other provider on the Texas grid.
Xoom works for: People who have an ACN rep they want to support. Customers who need prepaid electricity from a corporate-backed provider. Anyone who qualifies for Freedom2Connect and wants ETF reimbursement when switching.
Everyone else: Xoom’s NRG siblings—Reliant, Green Mountain, Cirro—are available on ComparePower and other comparison platforms where you can see how their rates stack up against the full market. If you want green energy, Gexa gives you 100% renewable on every plan. If you want the cheapest rate, comparison shopping on ComparePower will show you options Xoom can’t match through its ACN-influenced pricing.
Good For
- You want an NRG-backed provider with online signup and prepaid options
- You know an ACN rep you want to support through their direct sales channel
- You want the Freedom2Connect ETF buyout when switching providers
Avoid If
- You want 100% green energy--Xoom's greenest plan is only 50% renewable
- You're shopping purely for rock-bottom rates
- You don't want any connection to MLM sales channels
- You prefer providers with live chat support
