Company Overview

Express Energy launched in May 2017 with a tagline that tells you everything: “No Frills. Low Bills.” No TV ads. No rewards programs. No stadium sponsorships. 100% online, 100% paperless, and that overhead savings shows up in the rates.

The corporate story matters here. Express Energy is a trade name of Value Based Brands LLC, which is a subsidiary of Vistra Corp [NYSE: VST]. Vistra also owns TXU Energy, 4Change Energy, Veteran Energy, Dynegy, Ambit Energy, and Energy Harbor. Express, 4Change, and Veteran all operate under the same PUCT certificate (No. 10041) and share the same legal entity. They are different brands targeting different customer segments from the same parent company.

What that means for you: Express Energy is not a scrappy independent startup. It has the financial backing of one of America’s largest integrated energy companies. The “independent” label that floats around comparison sites is wrong—Vistra owns this brand outright. That is actually good news for customers worried about provider stability. Express is not going to disappear or go through bankruptcy. The Vistra balance sheet sits behind every plan they sell.

The BBB gives Express Energy an A+ rating with accreditation since September 2017 [BBB profile]. Google reviews sit at 4.5 stars. Home Energy Club rates them 4.8 out of 5 [Home Energy Club, 2026]. For a budget brand with minimal customer service hours, those numbers are strong.

One thing to understand: Express Energy is not on ComparePower. You cannot compare their plans side-by-side with other providers on most third-party marketplaces. Always check rates on ComparePower first, then compare what Express offers at the same usage level.

Where Express Energy Operates

Express Energy serves all four major deregulated utility territories in Texas: Oncor (Dallas-Fort Worth), CenterPoint (Houston), AEP Texas (Corpus Christi, South Texas), and TNMP (scattered regions across the state). That covers Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Arlington, Waco, Corpus Christi, Killeen, Round Rock, Plano, and most other deregulated cities.

Austin and San Antonio run municipal utilities. Express cannot sell there, and neither can any other provider on this site.

Plan Types Offered

Express Energy focuses on fixed-rate plans. No free nights. No time-of-use. No indexed plans. No prepaid. The simplicity is the point.

Bill Credit Plans (Flash Value, Fast Lane, Flash, Power Flash) Most Express Energy plans use a bill credit structure. You lock in a rate for 12-24 months, but the effective price per kWh depends on your usage hitting a credit threshold. For example, the Flash Value 12 includes a $125 credit when you use 1,000+ kWh/month. Hit that level and the effective rate drops significantly. Miss it and you pay the base rate, which is considerably higher than the advertised headline number.

This structure is common in Texas—Express is not unique here—but it means the rate you see on a comparison site only applies if your usage matches the plan’s sweet spot. Always check the Electricity Facts Label before signing.

Current plans target different usage levels:

  • Flash Value 12/24: $125 credit at 1,000+ kWh (best for standard Texas homes)
  • Fast Lane 12/24: $50 credit at 1,000+ kWh (lower credit threshold benefit)
  • Power Flash 12/24: $100 credit at 2,000+ kWh (large homes with high usage)
  • Flash 18: $100 credit at 1,000+ kWh (mid-length contract option)

Straight Rate Plans (Express Straight Rate 12/24) No bill credits. No usage thresholds. The rate you see is the rate you pay, regardless of how much electricity you use. These run higher per kWh than the bill credit plans at their sweet spots, but they are predictable. Good for apartments, small homes, or anyone who does not want to think about usage tiers.

Simple Fixed Plans (Express 12, Express 36) Standard fixed-rate plans with 12 or 36-month terms. The 36-month option is worth noting—few budget providers offer contracts that long, and it locks in rate certainty for three years.

Green Plan (Flash Green 12) 100% renewable energy backed by wind or solar power. 12-month fixed rate. Priced higher than standard plans—currently around 13.4 cents/kWh versus 7.7 cents for the Flash Value 12 [Choose Texas Power, April 2026]. The green premium is real, but the option exists.

100% Wind Upgrade Any standard Express Energy plan can be upgraded to 100% wind energy for an additional $6.95/month. This is a renewable energy credit (REC) add-on, not a change in your physical electricity source—same grid, same wires—but it offsets your usage with Texas wind generation.

What They Do Not Offer:

Early Termination Fees

Express Energy charges $20 per month remaining on your contract. That is one of the lowest ETF structures in Texas. On a 12-month plan with 6 months left, you would pay $120. Compare that to TXU’s flat $150-$295 or Frontier’s $150-$200.

The 60-day satisfaction guarantee lets new customers cancel without penalty within the first 60 days. One use per customer. A genuine safety net if you sign up and realize the plan does not fit your usage.

Credit Check and Deposit Policy

Express Energy does not run a traditional credit score check. They check your utility payment history only—this does not affect your credit score.

If your utility payment history is clean, no deposit. If it shows late payments, a one-time refundable deposit may be required.

Deposit waivers available for:

  • One year of documented positive payment history from a previous provider
  • Customers aged 65 or older with satisfactory payment records
  • Medically indigent individuals with proof of status
  • Victims of family violence with Texas Council certification
  • Low-income customers can split the deposit into two equal installments

Deposits are refunded with accrued interest after 12 consecutive on-time payments, or upon account closure with a clean payment record.

This is a meaningful difference from most providers. Express checks utility history, not FICO scores. That means someone with a low credit score but a clean electricity payment record could qualify with no deposit—while a provider like TXU or Reliant might still require one based on the credit score alone.

The 100% Online Model

Express Energy runs entirely paperless. Signup, billing, payment, usage tracking, plan changes, and renewals all happen through myexpressenergy.com. No paper bills. No mailed statements.

This is the trade-off that funds their lower rates. No retail presence. No large call center. Minimal overhead. If you set up autopay and check your account online once a month, Express works exactly as intended.

If you struggle with online account management or prefer paper bills, Express is not the right provider for you.

The bottom line on service: Express runs lean by design. The $200-$300/year you save compared to TXU partly comes from spending less on customer support. If you never call your electricity company, that trade-off is excellent. If you need regular help, the limited hours will frustrate you.

Express Energy vs. 4Change Energy vs. Veteran Energy

All three are Value Based Brands labels. Same legal entity. Same PUCT certificate. Same Vistra parent company. The difference is branding:

  • Express Energy: “No Frills. Low Bills.” Budget-focused, 100% online.
  • 4Change Energy: Donates a small percentage to charity. Same budget rates with a feel-good angle.
  • Veteran Energy: Military-affiliated branding with veteran charity partnerships.

The rates and plan structures are similar across all three. Pick whichever brand resonates, or just compare the specific plans available in your zip code. The electricity hitting your meter is identical.

The Bottom Line

Express Energy is a legitimate budget provider backed by Vistra Corp—the same company behind TXU Energy. The “No Frills. Low Bills.” positioning is accurate. Competitive fixed rates, low ETFs, 100% online management, and minimal overhead.

Express works for: Set-it-and-forget-it customers who manage everything online, use 1,000+ kWh/month (to hit bill credit thresholds), and never need to call customer service on evenings or weekends.

Not the best fit if: You want to comparison-shop on ComparePower (Express is not listed), you need prepaid electricity, you prefer talking to someone by phone, or your usage varies enough that bill credit plans create unpredictable bills.

The direct-sale catch: Because Express Energy is not on most comparison marketplaces, it is harder to verify you are getting the best deal. Before signing with Express, check rates on ComparePower at your actual usage level. If Express beats those rates after accounting for bill credits, go for it. If not, you have better options on the open market.
