Bottom Line: Rhythm is the digital-native pick—100% green by default, transparent pricing, one of the best apps in Texas electricity. TXU is the establishment pick—the widest plan menu, 24/7 phone support, and a two-decade track record, all at a premium. You’re choosing between a modern default and a proven institution.

The Newcomer vs the Establishment

One company started selling electricity in 2021. The other has corporate roots to 1882.

Rhythm Energy has been on the Texas market since February 2021—about five years. In that time it built to roughly 130,000 customers and recently acquired Inspire Clean Energy. It’s backed by Goldman Sachs through West Street Capital Partners VII, so the balance sheet is serious even if the brand is young.

TXU Energy has been a retail provider since 2002—24 years—with a corporate lineage stretching back to 1882. Its parent, Vistra Corp, trades publicly on the NYSE under VST. When people picture a big, safe Texas electricity company, they picture TXU.

That gap in age is the whole comparison. Rhythm bet on software and a clean-by-default product. TXU bet on scale, variety, and always being reachable. Neither is wrong. They’re built for different buyers.

The Green Question

The clearest split between them.

Rhythm: Every plan is 100% renewable, and there’s no green premium. You don’t opt in and you don’t pay extra—clean energy is the default, not an upsell. That’s the company’s founding pitch.

TXU: Green is an add-on. TXU’s GreenUp option puts 100% renewable-energy credits on any plan you choose, but you’re choosing to add it. The standard plan isn’t sold as 100% renewable.

If matching your usage to 100% renewable matters and you don’t want to think about it, Rhythm settles the question—it’s baked in at no extra cost. If green is a nice-to-have you’d rather toggle on selectively, TXU’s GreenUp gives you that control across its whole lineup.

Plan Variety and Specialty Options

This is where TXU’s scale shows.

TXU’s menu is the widest in Texas. Free nights plans. Seasonal passes. EV charging plans. Solar buyback. The GreenUp renewable add-on on top of any of it. If you have an unusual usage pattern—you work nights, you drive electric, you run high in summer—TXU probably has a plan shaped for it.

Rhythm’s lineup is narrower but sharp. Fixed-rate plans with transparent all-in pricing and no hidden fees. Time-of-use plans for people who can shift usage to cheaper windows. Smart-thermostat demand-response plans that pay bill credits when you let Rhythm nudge your thermostat during peak events. And a solar buyback plan that’s well-regarded among Texas solar owners.

Neither offers prepaid. If you need pay-as-you-go with no credit check, look elsewhere—both run a conditional deposit with waivers instead. TXU’s soft check waives the deposit for customers 55 and older, with a personal guarantee, and through other paths. Rhythm also waives its conditional deposit under set conditions.

The honest read: TXU wins on breadth. Rhythm wins on focus and price transparency. If you already know your habits, Rhythm’s tighter menu is easier to shop. If you want options, TXU has more shelves.

Support and Track Record

Here TXU pulls ahead, and it’s the reason to pay its premium.

TXU answers the phone 24/7. Storm at midnight, billing question on a holiday—someone picks up. For a lot of Texans, that alone is worth the 15-25% they’ll pay above the cheapest budget providers.

Rhythm’s phone support closes at 8 PM on weekdays and doesn’t run 24/7. Its app carries the load—and it’s one of the best apps in the market, an app-first company by design. If you’d rather tap through a screen than sit on hold, that’s a feature. If you want a human at 2 AM, it’s a gap.

On track record, there’s no contest. TXU has 24 years of Texas billing behind it and a public parent. Rhythm has five years and a private-equity backer with deep pockets. Both are financially sound. One has simply proven it through more Texas summers.

The Verdict

Choose Rhythm if:

  • 100% renewable on every plan with no premium is what you want
  • A strong app and transparent, no-hidden-fee pricing matter more than a call center
  • You own solar and want a well-regarded buyback plan
  • Time-of-use or smart-thermostat bill credits fit how you actually live

Choose TXU if:

  • You want the widest plan menu in Texas—free nights, EV, seasonal, GreenUp
  • 24/7 phone support that answers is non-negotiable
  • A 24-year track record and a public parent company help you sleep
  • You’d rather add green as an option than have it as the default

The real decision: Rhythm is the modern default—clean, transparent, app-run, priced fairly, but young and phone-limited. TXU is the institution—more plans, always reachable, longer proven, at a premium. Pick the newcomer’s product or the establishment’s safety net. We don’t care which—just buy the one built for you.
