Bottom Line: Texas’s two biggest electricity brands, both charging 15-25% above budget providers for identical power on the same grid. TXU wins on plan variety. Reliant wins on prepaid access. Most price-conscious Texans should skip both and save $200-$400/year with Gexa or Frontier.

The Corporate Reality

This is the heavyweight matchup of Texas electricity—and neither fighter deserves your money on price alone.

TXU Energy is owned by Vistra Corp [NYSE: VST], one of the largest power companies in the country. Vistra also owns Ambit Energy, 4Change Energy, Express Energy, Veteran Energy, and TriEagle Energy. Six retail brands, one corporate parent.

Reliant Energy is owned by NRG Energy [NYSE: NRG], a Fortune 500 company with roughly 8 million customers. NRG also owns Direct Energy, Green Mountain Energy, Cirro Energy, and Discount Power. Five residential brands under one roof.

Both are Fortune 500 subsidiaries. Both will exist next year. Neither gets credit for stability—that is table stakes for companies this size.

What you are actually comparing: two marketing departments with billion-dollar budgets fighting over the same customers on the same grid. TXU sponsors Cowboys games. Reliant sponsors the Texans. You pay for both advertising campaigns in your per-kWh rate.

What They Actually Sell

Both offer fixed-rate, variable, free nights, free weekends, green energy, and solar buyback. The differences are in the details.

TXU’s unique offerings:

  • Live Your Free: Auto-switches between free nights, free days, and free weekends each month based on which saves you more. Creative concept, but the base rate is high enough that budget fixed-rate plans still beat it.
  • Ultimate Season Pass: 50% off during peak summer and winter months. Good for homes with electric heat and big seasonal swings.
  • Solar Club: Support Texas solar farms without owning panels. Membership model.
  • Contract range: 1-24 months with ETFs of $150 (12-month) to $295 (24-month).

Reliant’s unique offerings:

  • Truly Free Nights (100% Solar): Energy and delivery charges both drop to $0 from 8 PM to 6 AM. The daytime rate compensates, but if you genuinely shift 42%+ of usage to night, the math works.
  • Truly Free Weekends (100% Solar): $0 energy and delivery from Friday evening through Sunday midnight. Assumes 32% weekend usage.
  • Flextra Credits: Your 2 highest-usage days per week are free, plus bonus credits. Up to 8 free days per month.
  • Prepaid Power: No credit check, no deposit, $75 minimum. Variable rate, daily billing.
  • Reliant Rewards: Points for bill payment, referrals, and thermostat programs. Worth $30-$75/year if you actively participate.

The honest assessment: TXU has more plan types. Reliant has more creative time-of-use structures. Neither is cheap. At 1,000 kWh, both typically run 15-25% above what you would pay at Gexa, Frontier, or 4Change for identical electricity.

The Credit & Deposit Question

Both run credit checks. Both require deposits if you fail.

TXU: Soft credit check. Deposit waived for good credit, age 55+, personal guarantee from existing TXU customer, family violence certification, or medical indigency. Deposits are split-able into two installments. TXU does not offer prepaid—if you cannot pass the credit check and cannot cover a deposit, TXU cannot serve you.

Reliant: Credit check with multiple paths around a deposit: good credit, letter of credit from previous provider, age 65+, active military, family violence certification, medical indigency. Non-refundable deposit alternative at roughly half the normal deposit. And the escape valve: Reliant’s Prepaid Power plan requires no credit check and no deposit at all.

Winner: Reliant. The Prepaid Power option means Reliant can serve customers that TXU simply turns away. If your credit is rough, this is the deciding factor.

The Verdict

Choose TXU if you have good credit and want the widest plan menu in Texas. Free nights, season passes, solar buyback, Live Your Free—TXU built a plan for nearly every usage pattern. Their 24/7 support is consistently strong, and the 60-day satisfaction guarantee lets you switch plans penalty-free.

Choose Reliant if you need prepaid electricity (no credit check, no deposit), you will genuinely use the Truly Free time-of-use plans, or you value the rewards program and app experience. Reliant’s Truly Free Nights is one of the best time-of-use products in Texas if your usage pattern matches.

Skip both if price is your priority. Gexa, Frontier, and 4Change sell identical electricity on the same grid for 15-25% less. The $200-$400/year you save funds itself. Check current rates on ComparePower for your zip code.
